Kerala Backwaters: Houseboat or Resort?

Almost every Kerala itinerary reaches the same fork: do you spend the night on a houseboat, or base yourself at a backwater resort and take day cruises?

The case for the houseboat

A converted kettuvallam drifting through the Vembanad canals at dusk is genuinely one of Indian travel's great experiences. Meals are cooked onboard, usually a karimeen fry and appams, and you wake up on the water. For couples and first-time visitors, one night is worth it.

The case against

Houseboats moor by regulation at around 5:30pm and do not move again until morning, so a two-night booking gives you far less cruising than people expect. Air conditioning typically runs only overnight on generator power. Families with young children and light sleepers often find the second night tedious.

What we usually recommend

One night on a premium houseboat, then two nights at a Kumarakom resort with backwater access. You get the experience without the diminishing returns, and the resort gives you a pool, reliable power and space to spread out.

On timing

Avoid the peak monsoon months of June and July unless you specifically want the rain. November to February is dry, cool and the most comfortable for cruising.
